Summer Learning Loss: What it is and How to Help

Summer learning loss occurs during the off-months of the education year. For Canada, these months are between July and August, and while we believe a break is always necessary, a lot can change in the eight weeks.
Studies show that, on average, this loss can be significant, with studies showing students can lose up to 2.6 months of math skills and 2 months of reading skills over the summer. It can be especially important to keep up a certain schedule so kids don't feel that lack of connection to school for two months.
Summer school is always a great option, but it can feel unfair, especially if it mirrors an actual school day. There are also hybrid camps, such as the one we run from July to August, that feature learning in the morning and fun in the afternoon. It is understood that these are not always affordable options, so one thing you can do is look up free math and English worksheets online and have your child dedicate at least an hour to refreshing their memory.
It is hard to feel as if they cannot catch up after two months of relaxation, and it may prove to be more stressful on the child. We recommend to keep oiling the gears of the mind!
