How Grades Matter and How They Don't

As parents, many place a high value on the grades their child is getting, and for good reason. However, placing too much value on grades can also mask what's important.

Grades can open doors to different academic opportunities, such as getting into a different high school program or competing in certain competitions. This is especially important for University application processes; however, they truly only count grade 11 and grade 12. For younger students, there's also the matter of grades reflecting accomplishments and growth, showing parents how far they've come. It can build confidence and be concrete proof that this student is thriving within school.

However, it is crucial to remember that grades will not always matter and do not completely dictate the future. Many jobs and opportunities can be granted through dedication outside of school to things such as sports or professional experience within the job field as they get older. It is just as important to remember that grades do not measure true intelligence. Not every adolescent learns the same way and understands material at the same pace as their peers. Related to this, it also doesn't always show their effort. The material may just not be clicking in the ways it needs to, and not for a lack of trying; it can be quite difficult to grasp new concepts, and if the effort is present, perhaps the grade can be overlooked a tad more.

Overall, grades do matter, but they are not a life sentence. Plus, if your child ever needs that extra help to boost it, we're always here!
