Learning at home can be a struggle, as this is usually where kids feel the most comfortable. However, there may be times when we want to provide after-school learning, especially with winter break coming up. Here are some ways that you could get your children to work on different areas:
Writing and Reading Comprehension:
Find something your child enjoys, whether it be Paw Patrol, Bluey, or something older like Harry Potter, and incorporate it into home life.
For example, they can watch an episode of Bluey and then write what they thought of that episode, and if they would’ve responded to a situation the same way as their favourite characters.
Or: Read a few chapters of Harry Potter and then write a short story pretending you’re a student there, will they be a Gryffindor or a Slytherin?
Math:
For younger kids, you could do this with a snack they like, such as “Mom gets two goldfish, and you get three, how many are there altogether?” Just to plant the seeds of addition.
When they reach an age where technology is allowed, kids can play games such as Math Playground to ensure screen time is being used positively.
Science:
Experiment! This is the most engaging way to get kids interested in science. Many sites present different ways to build upon scientific knowledge. For example, making a lava lamp with water, oil, and an effervescent tablet. Then explain the science behind it since water and oil can’t mix due to different densities.
Art:
Art is pretty self-explanatory: create! Use construction paper, scissors, anything of the sort, and have some days more structured, whereas other days free for all.
Overall, it is crucial to keep minds exploring and expanding, especially when school is out of session. Many kids are sponges and can absorb a lot of extracurricular activity, but make it fun!
